Arts proficiency Endorsement

Earn the North Carolina Arts Proficiency Endorsement

The Arts Proficiency Endorsement is an official distinction established by the North Carolina State Board of Education (Policy GRAD-007). It recognizes students who complete advanced arts coursework and meaningful arts experiences beyond the classroom.

This is a powerful way for band students to showcase commitment, leadership, and artistic growth on their diploma.

To earn the endorsement, students must:

1️⃣ Complete 4 Approved Arts Courses

Must use official NC state arts course codes
Earn a 3.0 unweighted GPA or higher in each course

2️⃣ Complete 40 Hours of Arts-Related Activities (Grades 9–12)

Must be completed outside of instructional time
Cannot be connected to required coursework or a grade
Must be documented and approved
Includes a short reflection for each activity

Students may earn multiple endorsements, but the endorsement is optional and not required for graduation.

Band students are uniquely positioned to earn this endorsement!

Approved activities may include:

Private lessons
Honor Band clinics (All-District, State)
Community band or theater participation
Assisting with performances or events
Attending concerts (not required for class)
Mentoring younger musicians
Summer music camps (if not required for credit)
Rehearsal hours outside of graded requirements

Important:

If an activity affects a grade or provides course credit, it does not count toward the 40 hours. However, optional or non-graded preparation time may count.
